시놉시스

아일랜드 더블린 외곽의 발리멈 지역은 말을 키우며 말과 함께 생활하는 문화가 아직도 살아 있는 곳이다. 로나는 이곳에서 말을 타며 말에게 딱 맞는 편자를 만드는 편자공이 되길 꿈꾼다. 하지만 이제 이곳도 개발로 인해 옛 모습을 잃어가고 있기에, 그 꿈을 접어야 할지도 모른다. 말 그리고 꿈에 관한 한 편의 시 같은 소녀의 성장 영화.

  Taxidancing (2012)

  In 1992, we saw a film called Into the West. It takes place in Ballymun outside of Dublin, and is the story of two Irish travellers and a magic horse. In early 2000s we went to live in Ireland and of course we went to Ballymun and experienced the special horse culture in the suburb. We went to the container stables, met a lot of young people that cared for the horses—and realized the importance of their existence. We went back many times.

  A few years ago, we heard that there were new laws and restrictions regarding the horses and that the green areas were disappearing. We decided to capture the changing Ballymun before it was too late. At that time, we met Lorna and her horse Big Foot and decided to tell their story.

  There has been made many music videos and photo sessions from the suburb Ballymun, mostly focusing on the problems, young lads dressed in tracksuits on horseback, living in the outskirts of the society- and that is what we wanted to avoid. What if we instead focus on the positive aspects, like the meaning and the purpose of the horses. How they can strengthen the bonds in a community, in a family - that is what we wanted to capture in this film.

리뷰

발리멈을 상징하던 두 개의 문화 ‘타워’(Tower)와 ‘말’(Horse). 이제 발리멈에는 말을 키우는 집이 거의 없고 ‘타워’는 곧 철거되어 사라질 예정이다. 평범한 운동복을 입고 안장도 얹지 않은 말에 올라 터벅터벅 주택가를 거니는 로라의 모습은 주변 풍경과 전혀 동화되지 못하고, 이제는 사라질 회색 아파트 단지 내 푸르른 공터에서 말을 탄 채 어울려 노는 아이들의 모습이 담긴 홈비디오와 묘한 대구를 이룬다.
‘타워’는 발리멈의 영광이었던 동시에 로라 가족의 찬란하고 행복했던 과거이기도 하다. 아프지 않은 엄마와 직업이 있던 아빠 그리고 가장 친한 친구인 말 ‘빅풋’과의 추억이 가득한 곳. 하지만 ‘타워’의 철거로 새로운 정체성을 찾아야 하는 발리멈 지역처럼 로라와 로라의 가족도 각자의 꿈에 몰두하며 그들이 처한 가혹한 현실을 넘어서 스스로의 삶을 유지할 수 있는 존재임을 증명해야 한다. 그래서 지금 로라의 가족이 끝도 없이 불행하거나 우울한 것은 아니다. 삶은 모두의 뜻대로 흘러가지 않지만, 가족은 서로의 꿈을 매개로 연대하며 스스로와 서로를 응원한다. 이렇게 꿈은, 삶은 계속될 것이다. 그렇기에 편자공이 되고자 하는 로라의 꿈은 반쯤은 무너져 아슬아슬하게 서있는 ‘타워’의 모습과도, 아직은 정확한 형태를 알 수 없는 철거된 자리에 세워질 쇼핑몰과도 동시에 겹쳐진다.
