슬로베니아의 한 도시 마리보에서 부패 정권에 저항하며 일어난 시위 현장으로 관객을 데려가는 이 영화는 어떤 카메라를 선택할 것인지 관객이 결정할 수 있도록 하는 인터랙티브 방식을 통해 당신이 살고 있는 도시에서 이런 시위가 발생한다면 과연 어떤 선택을 할 것인지 묻는다. 비폭력 시위와 충돌을 야기한 현장을 오가며, 행동하는 민주주의에 대한 질문을 던지는 다큐멘터리.

한 때 번영했던 산업도시인 슬로베니아의 마리보에서는 부패한 정치인에 대한 분노가 극에 달하며 대규모 시위가 벌어진다. 시민들은 두 번 거리로 나갔고, 두 번 모두 경찰에 의해 쫓겨났다. 폴리스 라인 뒤쪽에 위치한 미디어에서는 시위에 참여한 사람들을 훌리건이나 범죄자로 묘사했다. 폭발한 민심은 세 번째 대규모 시위로 이어지고, 폴리스 라인의 앞쪽에서 보면 전혀 다른 상황을 기록하기 위해 비디오 집단이 결성된다. 이 영화는 그들이 촬영한 푸티지로 구성되었다. 이 영화에서 주목할 것은 선형적인 내러티브를 따라가는 것이 아니라, 각각의 순간과 선택의 기로에서 관객들의 견해를 따라 전개되는 형태, 즉 관객 참여형으로 제작되었다는 점이다. 영화는 관객들에게 우리 자신이 이 시위의 한가운데에 있다면 어떤 선택을 했을지 질문을 하며, 시위의 현장으로 우리를 데려간다. 몇 가지 지점들에서 폭력을 선택할 것인지, 혹은 평화적인 시위를 할 것인지 등 시위의 전략과 윤리에 대해 관객들과 토론을 하면서, 앞으로 나아가는 것이다. <마리보 시위>가 이와 같은 형식을 따르는 것은 마리보 시위 현장에서 촬영된 이미지가 비단 슬로베니아의 마리보에만 한정되는 것은 아니기 때문이다. 시민들의 집회와 시위에 최루 가스와 섬광 수류탄으로 맞서는 경찰의 대응은 우리에게도 익숙한, 언제 어디에서나 일어날 수 있는 일이기 때문이다. 마리보 시위를 계기로 시장은 사임하고, 다른 도시들로 이러한 움직임은 확대된다. 하지만 여전히 질문은 남아있고, 영화는 그 질문을 우리에게 던진다. 당신이 거리에 서 있다면 어떤 선택을 할 것인가, 거리에서 민중의 권력을 지켜내는 방법은 무엇인가?
