Synopsis
The enduring and important topic of film aesthetics concerns images and sounds: which defines and dominates the other, or which forms the essence of a film? Of course, because a film is a narrative made by the contrapuntal interaction between visual and auditory senses, neither can form a film on its own and so it may be foolish to attempt to prioritize them. But if we deny the structured narrative and divide the interaction between images and sounds, film aesthetics in its traditional sense is challenged fundamentally. If modern music starts by questioning the scales of traditional music – the basic method to create melodies – it is natural for modern music to meet with experimental films. In this context, it seems also natural that the Japanese modern musician Kujun made this ambiguous, baffling film. Specializing in house music, Kujun has created a film in a new genre by combining distorted images, a plot with no definite context, and music mixing psychedelic and traditional melodies. Black-andwhite images of a dreamlike bar are suddenly replaced by night-time fights visualized in negative prints, and we can also see serious interview footage talking about acting as a profession. The film’s music continues with no obvious context, and the footage in which protagonists walk through the tsunami-stricken streets does not provide any social meanings or comments that the viewer might expect. The only context of reality, dreams, imagination, acting and all the other materials used in this film is that they are on the continuum of fantasy. (KANG Seokpil)
