Synopsis

In 2001 a mass grave was discovered in a suburb of Belgrade. Depth Two investigates the hidden story behind this horrid discovery and takes us back to 1999 and the NATO bombings in Serbia. Using the verbal testimonies of perpetrators and victims, it unfolds like a hypnotic thriller that visits the places where the crimes happened 17 years ago and follows the trail of this untold massacre, in an attempt to uncover and give a voice to the stories that are still intentionally buried in silence.

Review

It’s possible to cover up the past, but impossible to erase memory.
The film begins with the verbal testimonies about the discovery of freezer truck containing 55 bodies of ethnic Albanians dumped in the Drina river, close to the border between Aerbia and Romania. Later, other testimonies lead us to another discovery of a mass grave with about 700 bodies in a suburb of Belgrade. For what this unprecedented massacre was committed and who’s responsible for?
The film takes viewers to the scene which happened in the history through a experimental method while adopting a generic mystery thriller structure, on the other hand. The voice over remembering turbulent past days and the peaceful landscape of the current days make a subtle contrast and let viewers to have a blank space to the imagination where the viewers are invited to fill with their own thoughts.
This documentary, Depth Two was screened at the forum section of Berlinale. This film, exposing the covered- up truth with an experimental style, must be perfect for this section’s selection.
Still, even with discovery of the massacre, Serbian society stays silent about and would not give any account of it. What viewers learns from the film Depth Two is to remember and mourn for the historical time and space is what we, those who are alive have to. [Wook Steven Heo]
