Synopsis

Set in the Paris suburbs in high school teenagers chat after and even during class, sitting in the hallway or outside on a bench, looking at the city below them. At this age, they start thinking about leaving their family, when there is one, and even run away from it when it’s completely broken. Being by itself can bring as many good things as bad ones. This film becomes a place where they search and discuss the meaning of all this.

Review

When do 17-year-olds encounter loneliness for the first time? A group of youths share conversations sitting on the walls overlooking the city, in the nurse’s office and hallways or even during class. We are introduced to ten teenagers attending Lycée Romain Rolland in Ivry-sur-Seine in the outskirts of Paris. Director Claire Simon met them during a filmmaking workshop and conducted interviews with them about their loneliness. In the film, even during the most private and intimate conversations, the presence of the camera is hardly felt. The director must have spent a lot of time with the teenagers in order to achieve natural communication. The film provides an ideal place to seek meaning and discuss all this, and the presence of the camera has the impact of cinema therapy. The film conveys a variety of heartfelt stories including the remarkable accounts provided by a first-generation Asian immigrant and by a girl adopted from Africa. The latest film by Claire Simon, whose previous work The Graduation was screened at many film festivals in Korea, was premiered d at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival. [LIM Seaeun]
