Synopsis

A tomato is planted, harvested and sold at a supermarket, but it rots and ends up in the trash. Ends? No. Island of Flowers follows it up until its real end, among animals, trash, women, and children. And then the difference between tomatoes, pigs, and human beings becomes clear.

Review

This 1989 Brazilian short film won Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. As the earliest model of parodic documentaries, the film presents a disturbing critique of capitalism amidst its humorous expressions and grotesque images. With the help of a monotone voiceover, the film depicts details on how a tomato is produced, distributed and sent to the final destination. The path of the tomato from the garden to the garbage dump is tracked by using various devices such as diagrams, a collection of images, reenactment and repetition. A tomato from a big farm run by Japanese man is displayed in a supermarket and bought by a perfume saleswoman together with some pork. She intends to prepare a tomato sauce for the pork, but finds one of the tomatoes inadequate and throws it in the garbage. The garbage is sent to a landfill named 'Island of Flowers'. The tomato considered inadequate for the pigs, is quickly picked up by the poor women and children of Island of Flowers. This humorous documentary with a new idea is a masterpiece that will go down in history as a satirical parody. [JEONG Minah]
