International Competition Jury Statement
The Amazon community, having maintained its own tradition far away from civilization, struggles to survive against the logic of capitalism and power. The camera leads to the extensive and careful observation of the situation, by pursuing the threat of development that can loom large over the land of the life, and we could feel the power of the camera in the film. We could also recall and reflect back on the sharp conflict situations not only in the Korean society but also all around the world, watching the incident happened in Peru. Our jury selected this film that enables us to introspect on the human being seriously through the process of filming the ripple effect and wounds of the shocking incident caused by the logic of capitalism and power without making any adjustments. The Special Jury Award goes to When Two Worlds Collide directed by Heidi Brandenburg and Mathew Orzel.
The eyes out from inside the scene focusing on a current social problem and the contrast between two different textures of images created the editing with the sharp impact. The International Competition jury selected, without any hesitation, the film in which a filmmaker is looking for himself with the camera and the world is searching him on its own terms, thanks to the advantage of collaboration between its two perspectives. The 8th DMZ Documentary Film Festival decided to give the White Goose Award Those Who Jump. We would like to pay respects to Abou Bakar Sidibé, Moritz Siebert and Estephan Wagner.

Asian Competition Jury Statement
In Asia, there are so many subject matters that the documentary films should deal with. The eight films, nominated in the Asia Competition section this year, have been armed with the sincerity and the intense awareness of societal issues and historical problems.
We could not help but hesitate to reward only one film, because all the entries have their own strengths and are worthy of praise. However, we found out a documentary film that has intensively shown the awareness of all these problems. A young courageous documentarist portrayed the reality in which the wave of the global capitalism has brought more poverty and political regression and has also pressed the people to the wall, through the film. It is RedClothes directed by Chan Lida.
This film depicts the harsh reality in which the police shot at the workers demanding higher wages in a garment factory for the Western brands. It also shows that the labor problem related to the reality of society in Cambodia, paying attention not only to the reality of the workers but also to the situation of the rural areas, their hometown that they had left. We would like to give the Asian Perspective Award to RedClothes, in order to commend the courage of the producer and director of the film and to support their continuous efforts.

Korean Competition Jury Statement
Our jury thanks DMZ Film Festival for a wonderful glimpse into the riches of contemporary Korean documentary. If this is a representative sample of “where it’s at,” we are impressed. We see a documentary community curious about the world in both its local and global dimensions, along with a strong desire to search for new, creative, and cinematically fresh avenues for a commitment to social justice. This observation led us to an immediate consensus on two films.
While direct cinema often suffers from an icy cold gaze, this film is infused with a heartwarming intimacy between filmmaker and filmed that is made palpable in every single scene. It gestures to histories both personal and grand, while posing unanswerable questions about the future—both individual and societal.
The Special Jury Award goes to Still and All by director Kim Young-jo.
From the Sanrizuka Series of Ogawa Productions to Still and All, scenes of people being evicted from their homes are a staple of Asian documentary. This stylish and unique film poses a simple question: “What happened?” So begins the filmmakers’ quest for truth. But then memory intervenes. When human recollection fails to comport to the available facts, we gradually realize this film is less a quest for truth than a meditation on the very nature of documentary truth to be specific, its ultimate, protean impossibility. “What happened” remains a mystery, and instead we take away not answers but questions. Questions and lessons to bring to the next documentary striving, and perhaps straining, to tell a truth. Or maybe just a story.
The Best Korean Documentary Award goes to The Remnants, directed by Kim Il-rhan and Lee Hyuk-sang.

“In this moment, i swear. We are INFINITE.”
