작품의 배경에 대한 사전 정보 없이 보면 더 좋은 영화들이 있는데 <노란 옷의 사나이>가 바로 그런 영화다. 뉴욕 지하철 개표기와 이곳을 드나드는 시민들을 직부감으로 촬영한 이 원 쇼트 영화는 8분이라는 짧은 상영시간에도 불구하고 다양한 서사와 감정을 담고 있다. 먼저 관객은 영화의 주인공인 노란 옷을 입은 남자에게 어떤 일이 벌어지고 있는지 알아내려 노력할 것이다. 그는 어떤 이유에서인 개표기를 통과하지 못하고, 그럴수록 더 열정적으로 개표기를 통과하기 위해 노력한다. 관객 역시 이 사태의 원인을 알 수 없고 그렇기에 이 영화는 그 자체로 수수께끼 같은 재미를 만들어낸다. 나아가 관객은 이 영화에 숨은 의미는 없는지 적극적으로 해석하려 할 것이다. 주인공이 흑인이란 점에 주목해 미국 사회 내 인종차별에 대한 알레고리로 읽을 수도 있을 것이고, 끝까지 법을 어기지 않는 주인공을 보며 정직과 양심에 대한 우화로 읽을 수도 있을 것이다. 물론 감독은 ‘기계와 인간의 대결’에 대해 짧게 언급하였지만 <노란 옷의 사나이>는 다른 방향으로도 읽을 수 있는 가능성을 활짝 열어놓는다. 결과적으로 <노란 옷의 사나이>는 단순한 연출과 그 밑에 녹아 있는 풍부한 의미가 재치있게 만난 흔치 않은 예를 보여준다. 남자는 과연 지하철에 탈 수 있을까? 그 놀라운 결말을 여러분들도 직접 확인해보길 바란다. • Some films are better enjoyed without any prior knowledge and Mr. Yellow Sweatshirt is one such example. The film presents a single-shot scene (from above) of a subway station in New York. Despite the short running time of only 8 minutes, we find a narrative and various emotions in the story. To start with, the audience will want to find out what is happening to the man in a yellow sweatshirt. For some reason, he cannot go through the ticket turnstile no matter how hard he tries. The whole situation turns into a kind of riddle that entertains the curious audience. That the protagonist is a black man means the film can be read as an allegory of the racial discrimination within American society. Or, since he resolutely abides by the law, it can be said to be a fable about honesty and conscience. Although the director briefly mentions ‘human-versus-machine’, Mr. Yellow Sweatshirt is open to interpretations.
