Synopsis
It is now a multicultural era. Everyone talks about the space of the global village and global time. The terms have now become cliché and are not so realistic. ‘Montant’, a multicultural chorus composed of people of different races and languages, is an attempt to test that possibility. Or it may be a kind of vehement attempt to overcome the limitations by confronting them head on. Things were rough from the beginning. Unbelievably bad singing which made audition judge ‘Insooni’ shake her head meant reading sheet music or writing songs were simply improbable, communication problems, and even trying to make it to practice were all problems. But they gradually became a team as they remembered lullabies they had heard as a child and shared their experiences living in a foreign land until they got to perform for the first time. They made many mistakes but the exhilaration of producing perfect harmony according to the rhythm and the cheering of the audience resonated not just among the chorus members on stage but also to all those who watch off screen. They were able to experience the moment of multiculture through the power of singing to bring people’s hearts together. The singing abilities of the individuals of the chorus are still not completely stable and ‘multiculture’ within Korean society is still a long way off. But there’s no need to be impatient. Like the lyrics they sing, ‘these are inevitable things that happen because we are different.’ We have only just taken the first step. (KIM Ha-na)

OH Jung-hunOh Jung-hoon started as a documentary filmmaker working for Purn Production. Since then, he has produced documentary films such as We Must Have a Promise, The Three-Legged Crow, and Power of the People. From 2002 to 2010, Oh worked as a media instructor in the MEDIACT. While he continues documentary filmmaking, he is also involved in management of the Seoul Independent Documentary Film & Video Festival.
