Synopsis

“I” read a biography of Independence activist, Kim Won-bong and travel to his hometown, Miryang. During the trip, “I” come to have curiosity about his wife Park Cha-jeong. Park Cha-jeong was born to the family of activists and committed her life to Korean independence movement. She was shot and wounded in a war in 1939 and passed away after being ill in bed for five years. “I” visit Busan where Park has grown up in order to find why “I” didn’t know about her so far and how her life was like.

  이 나라에는 기억되지 못하는 위인들이 수도 없이 많다. 기필코 기억되어야 함에도 기억되지 못하는 사람들. 그 중에서 여성 독립운동가들의 이야기를 담았다. 당신은 여성 독립운동가를 몇 명이나 알고 있는가? 유관순 이외에 여성 독립운동가 이름을 들어본 적이 있는가? 내가 만난 사람들도 여성 독립운동가 중 한 명인 박차정을 알지 못하고, 어쩌다 아는 사람이 나타나면 그저 의열단장 김원봉의 아내로만 기억하고 있을뿐이다. 왜 ‘여자’라는 존재는 항상 남자의 그림자가 되어버리는 걸까. 나는 이 영상을 통해 안창호, 김구, 윤봉길, 김원봉과 같은 남성 독립운동가 이외에도 수많은 여성 독립운동가가 있었음을 이야기하고 싶었다.

Review

The film <Disappeared Women> starts from one question. Why do we perceive independence movements as exclusive property of men? How come our answer to the question “Do you know any women independence activist?” is always confined to “Yoo Gwan-sun?” The two directors, Yoo-rang and Sa-waol, take off for an odyssey to find the answer to the question by finding the trace of the woman independence activist, 'Park Cha-jung.' However, the answer is not easy to find. The directors do not acquire satisfactory enlightenments from the elders they traveled a long way to meet. Will their journey end in vain? Just when this doubt comes into mind, a fracture appears in the ending of this film, which was devoting itself to recording the words of the elder. The directors insert their voice after the moment one of the elders say “Women also participated in the independence movement in concealment.” “In concealment? The Park Cha-jung that I knew was not someone who would hide while raising her voice.” The voice continues by saying “People most often consider women as someone’s wife, or assistants of men. How many more Park Cha-jungs would there have been? And, will I be remembered?” Though Yoo-rang and Sa-wol could not earn the answer they yearned for, they succeed in developing their question in a sound way.
