Synopsis

Maria has been dreaming about escaping from her slum neighborhood in Davao, Philippines, and getting a job abroad. When Maria was introduced to a talent manager, Madam Yolie, her dream was about to come true. The manager has witnessed the ups and downs of the sex industries of neighboring Asian countries and sees the openings in the industry as job opportunities for poor Filipino women.

Review

The film of the title referring to the country where US forces are stationed talks about the women from poor countries using their bodies to host US troops and provide them with rest. A system exploiting women as sexual objects works in a stable cycle that transcends borders, and the camera moves to expose the exploitation structure that excludes the offenders controlling all these things and creates the conflict between the middlemen and the victims. The film follows the story about Maria, a 20-year-old Filipina working as a singer at a U.S. army base club in Gunsan and about the rehabilitation of Joy who is in the lawsuit after the escape from the club in Pyeongtaek. In addition, it unravels the female import industry for the US military formed in Korea and the Philippines. Yoli who runs the agency to recruit Filipino women, Korean broker Mr. Jeong, and Papa Jeong who operates a bar in US military base camp. The film has an effective structure that allows the audience to judge their own words and actions and to understand the essence of this huge industry. [JEONG Minah]
