Review

When Seungmin decides to drop out of school, her mother starts preaching to him. Her mother believes that her decision has sprung from disobedience. Seungmin wonders if quitting school would make her a prodigal son. The question is tragic and so is the situation that gives rise to it. She stares blankly at the priest, and takes a look at himself who tried to prove something. She walks back home from school. She seems calm but is far from it. The documentary allows us to see his mind. It is a rare experience that is both poignant and enjoyable. This is not wholly due to the fact the director tells his own story. The film does not rely on the narration. In fact, emotions abound in scenes filled with images only. There are definite outcomes of the director’s careful consideration and sensibilities – scenes selected an arranged in tune with emotions, the way she listens to the priest’s sermon, and the way the camera stops in the ending. They all reveal the artistry of the documentary genre, and give a reason as to why Seungmin's decision must be respected. [AHN Seulki]
