Synopsis

Three Korean civilians, part of landmine victims struggling in the fight against South Korean government denying the existence of landmine victims. All of them have been injured from the explosion of leftover landmines, most of which had been buried during the Korean War. Meanwhile, there is one man was solely motivated by his own belief that mine clearance is the first step towards Korean reunification.

Review

The DMZ is the world's largest landmine-buried area. The military authorities assert that there is no damage caused by landmines in Korea and that they are thoroughly controlled to prevent civil damage. Nevertheless, no one believes that. The accidents caused by the lost landmine are still taking place. Punch Bowl follows landmine victims and civilian activists. Pastor Lee Kyungok, one of the victims, had an accident that made her legs shattered at the age of five. Her father did everything to remedy her legs, but she blamed him and cursed the harsh world. After growing older and having her own children, she started to understand how her father must have felt. She sang a song dedicated to her father trying not to shed tears, which made it impossible to measure her pain. The camera, calmly recording her testimony without interruption, was severely shaken when it discovered the landmine. The shaking camera and the trembling voice of the director searching for landmines with a civilian activist convey the horror he experienced in a vivid and humorous way. But the camera soon returns to the cold reality of the Republic of Korea trapped in landmines. [MAENG Soojin]
