Synopsis

The mainly theoretic university teacher training has for decades been followed with bureaucratic regularity, the practical part of the training. It’s comparable to a leap into icy water when prospective teachers work for two years in the field of tension between grading and being graded. They must educate and are educated themselves. From day one they are forced to play conflicting roles.

Review

Pre-service teachers share champagne after signing their teacher’s pledge. A bee falls into a glass of champagne and struggles to get out. The film follows three pre-service teachers with different personalities and attitudes towards life. Maintaining a careful, observant mode, the film achieves a delicate balance sometimes like a comedy full of humorous lines and situations and sometimes like a sophisticated psychological thriller. As they face difficult students and receive criticism from senior teachers, they lose confidence and their initial ambitions turn into despair. What are the roles and influences of the educational system and individuals? As quoted during the class, Herman Hesse explains in Beneath the Wheel that "At the start, his soul is a jungle without paths or order. And, like a jungle, it must first be cleared and its growth thwarted. Thus, it is the school's task to subdue and control man with force and make him a useful member of society." Must we be subdued and controlled? Are we like the bee that falls into the glass of champagne? [Jisu Klaire YOO]
