Synopsis
Beautiful Things portrays the everyday life of four characters by their respective titles: 'PETROLEUM', 'CARGO', 'MEASURE' and 'ASHES'. An oil field located in the desolate desert, a cargo ship in a boundless ocean, an anechoic room limiting the sound and a waste disposal plant made out of ferroconcrete are their workplaces. They encounter ghosts of the past in the present with isolation and daily routines.

Review
Four men confront themselves alone in isolated circumstances. Day by day, they are either getting accustomed to the infinite silence or trying to get used to it. In a space with no borders, they listen to the sound pouring out from within, and trace back the passage of time to uncover hidden wounds. As time goes by, we witness how their lives encounter one another within the huge frame of products as represented by toys and the consumer society. Just before the common frame is brought to the surface by the dancing couple in the shopping mall, the superb images and sound editing suddenly make connections, thereby inducing something that can be referred to as a shared fate. In addition, the floating, observant camera expands the continual silence and solitude into a more universal realm and poses an existential question. The dynamic images of machines work well with music, sound, voices and sometimes even songs, resulting in a brilliant rhythm between images and sounds. The film marks the arrival of a new Italian filmmaker with a promising future. [RHEE Souewon]
