Synopsis

Tinder. Woman seeks men. Man seeks women. Everything could be so simple if she weren’t in Israel and the guys nearby that the app suggests in search mode weren’t in the West Bank. Ines, an Israeli woman from Tel Aviv, the creator of the film and the main protagonist, makes contact with men from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip through dating websites and apps, overlooking the perpetual conflict in the background.

Review

There’s nothing unusual about looking for a partner on a dating application. But what if it involves an Israeli woman and a Palestinian man? The Men behind the Wall is a daring documentary where the director takes it upon herself to answer this interesting question. The biggest asset of this film is its candidness. The director shares with us in detail the narcissistic self-introduction she is written to impress others and the profile pictures that she is taken dressed up to the nines. Even when the guy on the other end sends her a bawdy message, the director counters it with wit. As a result, the director proves effectively the obvious fact that we are all human. In the face of the desire to have a good time with someone you like, the issues of ethnicity, politics and religion are reduced to mere ‘keywords’ that can be changed with a single click. Although the film clearly deals with a political theme, it indirectly touches on the complex political-military power dynamics between Israel and Palestine. Yet, perhaps it can be read as the director’s enthusiastic commentary on the absurd reality. [KIM Bonyeon]
