Review

Set against the backdrop of a beautiful beach, this documentary depicts the dreams and friendship of an 11-year-old boy in Bangladesh named Javed. When his mother badgers him to make money, he runs away from home and finds shelter under an outdoor parasol on the beach. It is both endearing and pitiful of him and his friend Shahidul to lie side by side and talk about their families while playing computer games. In the opening narration, he introduces himself as a surfer and asserts that he wants to be respected. From his shining eyes and attitude as he keeps pursuing his dream, we detect a sense of confidence, pride and independence that imbues the film with liveliness. In the daily lives of Javed and his friend Shahidul, the beach becomes a refuge for poor children of Bangladesh where they can nurture their dreams and friendship. The image of Javed participating in the surfing competition and riding the waves adds to the film’s liveliness. [BYUN Hyegyeong]
